The Collections of the Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week are upon us and IMG Fashion announced its impressive lineup of designers showing their collections at Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park.

Hundreds of thousands of fashion industry professionals, insiders and VIP’s will descend upon New York City for eight days of shows and presentations by some of the world’s leading fashion designers.

“New York City is the fashion capital of the world, and will become the heartbeat of the city,” says Peter Levy, SVP Managing Director, IMG Fashion Worldwide. “Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, the city’s single largest media event, is proud to offer some of the biggest names in fashion, as well as young and emerging talent, an unsurpassed platform to debut their Spring Collections.”

The New York Fashion Week, which historically kicks off the first of the “big four” fashion weeks occurs during the month of February for Autumn/Winter collections, and during September for the Spring/Summer collections.

For those keen on a history lesson, the fashion week was started in 1943 during World War II by well-known fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert, and named Press Week, and continued through the 1950s. Fashion shows continued in New York during the 1960s through 1980s, but were operated by individual American designers. In 1993, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) reorgnized the fashion shows in Bryant Park, which became the the New York Fashion Week of today. CFDA formed the entity 7th on Sixth to manage the fashion week, which was later acquired by IMG, International Management Group.

The fashion week was known as Olympus Fashion Week between 2003 and 2006 when principally sponsored by Olympus of Japan (a camera manufacturer). In 2007, the fashion week became known as Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week, when Mercedes-Benz became the principal sponsor.

The Milan and Paris fashion weeks (“big four”) are now broken into several shows by category, with the men’s wear collections proceeding the official opening New York shows in January and September.
